ALBUM REVIEW by Michael Kent
Reviewing albums by new artists is not my favorite pastime. It's invariably the same, trying to find interesting things to say about average work, so it was with a slightly heavy heart that I slotted in Ben HillŐs debut album - "Short Confessions" and sat back.
This one was different, from the first track something stood out. It took me at least five tracks to try and pin point it, but I finally nailed it with the title track itself on the album at number six.
I believed him. It was that simple. I also wanted to hear more, which trust me, does not often happen. ItŐs one of those albums that just works.
There's something in there for everyone too. The Tamla-inspired "Everything You Do" has you smiling along, while lonely introspection invades the evocative "Together Alone". One of my highlights was "Strange" which on the first listen seems out of place with its fellow songs. But listen again and you realize why it's such a standout track.
Lyrically thereŐs not a duffer among 'em. Ben does share a part of his soul with you and it's a rewarding journey to take. So for anyone looking for a polished, engaging and frank body of work - take it for a spin, sit back and smile.
